Yet Another Entry Into The 404 Page Hall Of Fame

As we've mentioned before, having an awesome 404 Page is a source of pride among startups. From the Twitter Fail Whale, to the Google Fail Whale (of course)to the Digg Fail Ox to Blippy's Fail Double Rainbows you have to admit that these things freaking make your day. Social gaming startup EightBit.me (which has yet to launch whatever its planning on doing with its armies of 8-bit Twitter avatars) has moved away from the fail anthropomorphic animals and memes, to yes, a Fail Nintendo Game Cartridge, above. The "Blow me" here is referring to the once sacred art of blowing into video games to get them to work AND NOT ANYTHING ELSE.

Apple's Tim Cook hints at cheaper iPhone, prepaid possibilities to come?

Apple COO Tim Cook got all buddy-buddy with Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi this week, talking about Apple's business strategy -- nothing out of the ordinary there -- but this morning, that analyst decided to publicly paraphrase an intriguing part of the interview. Guess what? It sounds like a cheaper iPhone may indeed be in the cards:
While Tim stopped short of explicitly stating that Apple would pursue a lower price iPhone, he did state that Apple was working hard to "figure out" the prepaid market and that Apple didn't want its products to be "just for the rich," but "for everyone"; he also stated that Apple "understood price is big factor in the prepaid market" and that the company was "not ceding any market." Cook noted that Apple executives - including himself - had spent "huge energy" in China, noting that it is "a classic prepaid market." He further noted that the handset distribution model was poorly constructed and that Apple would look to "innovate" and do "clever" things in addressing that market.
As you can see, there aren't any statements of fact here, just some general strategy ideas, but if Apple indeed plans to put an iPhone in every pot, it would be helpful if it didn't have to rely on the carrier subsidy model.

Panasonic abandons Jungle portable gaming project, probably scared off by the NGP

Panasonic has decided to discontinue development of its audacious Jungle portable gaming console, citing "changes in the market and in our own strategic direction" as the reasons. If we had to guess, we'd say those market changes mostly relate to Sony announcing the utterly spectacular NGP, whose release probably coincided too closely with what Panasonic had on its Jungle roadmap, and so the latter company decided to cut its losses and run home. Panasonic also engaged in some early testing with US consumers late last year, which now seems likely to have born unsatisfactory results. It's a shame, we were sincerely looking forward to another competitor in the portable gaming arena, but we suppose it's better for a bad product to never see the light of day than to depress us all with its woefulness.

AT&T will start selling Kindle 3G e-reader in its retail stores from March 6th

AT&T is adding the first e-reader to its catalog of connected devices and, unsurprisingly, it's the 3G version of Amazon's latest-generation Kindle. There's nothing peculiar about this agreement, the 3G Kindle will cost $189, the same as it does on Amazon's online portal, and there are no special content or add-on deals in place. It's just another locale where you'll be able to "test drive" and purchase Amazon's all-time best-selling product. Stock should be arriving shortly for a March 6th launch, though if you're looking for the WiFi-only Kindle, you'll have to look elsewhere, AT&T will only be selling the 3G-equipped 6-incher.

Get One Year of Free Gmail Backups to Backupify [Deals]

A small set of Gmail's users found all their Gmail stuff vanished over the weekend. Online backup service Backupify (previously mentioned) is taking the opportunity to entice new users with a coupon code (savegmail) for a year of free backup with one of their premium plans, which, of course, includes Gmail. For some of us, Backupify seems like a worth-paying-for service, and definitely a viable option for those not up for command-line-based or IMAP backup maneuvers. See details on the Backupify blog. Z-Type is a fun way to learn to touch type

z-type
If you're a skilled touch-typist, this time-waster isn't for you. But if you're just learning to touch-type (or have recently switched to a superior layout), Z-Type might prove a nice way to practice your typing skills while having a bit of fun.

It's a basic shooter game: Spaceships come at you from the top, and you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit the bottom and destroy you. You do the shooting by typing the words associated with the baddies: Each spaceship has one word, and every letter sends a shot aimed at it. Once you finish typing the word, the ship explodes.

The graphics are very nice, and when you're done with the game it shows you your score and accuracy. The only thing I didn't like about this game is that it wouldn't let me set the speed, and it seems to be aimed at novice typists. If I could just select the level of difficulty before starting to play, I suspect it would have been much more engaging.

Still, for novice typists it's a great little way to practice!
